Cockapoo UK: Food, Insurance & Grooming Guide

The Cockapoo is a Cocker Spaniel and Poodle cross, not a breed the Royal Kennel Club recognises. In a 2024 RVC study of 1,856 UK Cockapoos, they did not differ from Cocker Spaniels on 49 of 57 common disorders, but had 2.13 times the odds of ear infections, so ear and coat care matter most.

Health

Cockapoos can inherit health conditions from either parent breed. The Cockapoo is not a breed recognised by the Royal Kennel Club, so there is no official breed health-testing scheme; ask the breeder which tests the Cocker Spaniel and Poodle parents have had.

The best UK evidence is a 2023 owner survey of 9,402 dogs under five, including 1,856 Cockapoos (Bryson et al., 2024, RVC). Compared with Cocker Spaniels, Cockapoos showed no difference for 49 of 57 disorders, but higher odds of itching (2.67 times), ear infections (2.13 times) and vomiting (1.41 times). Compared with Poodles there was no difference for 45 of 57; Cockapoos had lower odds of dental disease (odds ratio 0.16) and kneecap luxation (0.49) but higher odds of anal sac disorders (2.09 times). The dogs were young, so the study says little about conditions of later life.

Crossbreeds are sometimes said to be healthier because of "hybrid vigour", but in a 2024 study of UK dogs, crossbreeds had a median lifespan of 12.0 years against 12.7 years for purebreds (McMillan et al., Scientific Reports), so do not assume a cross is automatically healthier. That figure covers all crossbreeds.

We have not given treatment costs for each condition because we could not find a published UK source for them. For typical consultation and surgery prices, see our average vet bill guide.

Ear infections (otitis externa)
2.13 times the odds of Cocker Spaniels in a 2024 RVC study. Watch for head shaking, pawing at ears, discharge or smell, and see your vet early.
Skin allergies / atopy
Itching (pruritus) was 2.67 times the odds of Cocker Spaniels (RVC, 2024). Recurring itching or ear problems can be linked to allergies; ask your vet.
Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
Ask whether both parents have been DNA tested for PRA.
Familial nephropathy (kidney)
Ask whether the Cocker Spaniel parent has been DNA tested.
Hip dysplasia
Ask for hip scores for both parents.
Separation anxiety
Ask how the puppies have been socialised, and plan gradual alone-time training.

Health tests to ask a breeder for

  • PRA DNA test for both parents
  • Familial nephropathy DNA test for the Cocker Spaniel parent
  • Hip scores for both parents

The Cockapoo is not a breed recognised by the Royal Kennel Club, so there is no official breed testing scheme. Ask which tests each parent has had.

Feeding a Cockapoo

Cockapoos vary in size, so feed for your own dog's weight and activity. If your Cockapoo has recurring skin or ear problems, talk to your vet before switching foods, as they may suggest a structured elimination trial. The foods below are examples, not a ranking. For cost-per-day comparisons see our dog food comparison, and use the dog food portion calculator to work out how much to feed. Grooming is a big part of the running cost for a curly coat; our dog grooming cost guide lists salon prices, and our cost of owning a dog guide gives a monthly budget.

Insuring a Cockapoo

Pawwala is not authorised by the FCA. We explain how cover works and do not give advice or recommend insurers. Pawwala earns a fee when you get a quote through a link marked Ad. Always read the policy wording. How we make money

Cockapoos can inherit conditions from both parent breeds, and ear and skin problems can recur, so check how each policy treats ongoing and recurring conditions and the excess per claim. Premiums depend on age, postcode, excess and cover level, so compare real quotes.

Getting a Cockapoo responsibly

Ask the breeder for both parents' health-test results, including PRA and hip scores and, for the Cocker Spaniel parent, familial nephropathy. Ask how the puppies have been socialised. Rescue organisations also rehome Cockapoos.

What were Cockapoos bred for?

Companionship. The Cockapoo is a modern cross and has no Royal Kennel Club breed history of its own. Both parents were bred for work: the Royal Kennel Club says the Cocker Spaniel was bred to hunt woodcock, which gave it its name, and was recognised as a separate variety in 1893 (RKC Cocker page). The Poodle was bred in Germany as a water retriever for duck hunters; its traditional clip left hair over the joints for warmth (RKC Miniature Poodle page).

That mix shows in the coat. The Royal Kennel Club lists the Cocker as a shedding breed and the Miniature Poodle as does not shed, so a Cockapoo can inherit either kind of coat. No dog is guaranteed to be hypoallergenic; if someone in your home has a dog allergy, spend time with the puppy's parents first. In the 2024 lifespan study, the parent breeds had medians of 13.3 years (English Cocker) and 14.0 years (Poodle); the study gives no Cockapoo figure (McMillan et al., 2024).

Cockapoo vs Cavapoo

Both crosses were in the same 2024 RVC study. Cockapoos matched Cocker Spaniels on 49 of 57 disorders and Cavapoos matched Cavalier King Charles Spaniels on 50 of 57. The main differences: Cockapoos had higher odds of itching and ear infections than Cockers, and Cavapoos higher odds of vomiting (1.92 times) than Cavaliers (Bryson et al., 2024). Neither cross is recognised by the Royal Kennel Club, so the parents' health tests matter more than which cross you choose. Our Cockapoo vs Cavapoo comparison sets the two side by side.

Cockapoo ear care

Floppy ears reduce airflow, which can leave the ear canal warm and moist, and ear hair can trap moisture further. Drying the ears after bathing or swimming and cleaning them as your vet advises are sensible habits.

Signs of an ear infection include head shaking, pawing at the ears, dark discharge and an unpleasant smell. Getting an infection treated early is better than letting it become chronic. If your Cockapoo keeps getting ear infections, ask your vet about underlying allergies, as ear disease can be a sign of atopic dermatitis.

Cockapoo grooming

The coat is the most demanding part of owning a Cockapoo. Curly or wavy coats hold loose hair rather than dropping it, and that hair mats if it is not brushed out. Mats tend to form behind the ears, in the armpits and around the collar. See our dog grooming guide for brushes and tools.

  • Regular brushingUse a slicker brush followed by a metal comb, working through the whole coat down to the skin. Line brushing (parting the coat section by section) helps you reach the base of the coat.
  • Professional groomingA full groom covers bath, dry, brush-out, trim, ear check and nail clip. Ask your groomer how often your dog's coat needs it, and look for one used to curly or wavy coats.
  • Ear hairAsk your groomer or vet whether your dog's ear hair needs removing. Never use scissors inside the ear canal.
  • Coat lengthA shorter clip is easier to keep free of mats. A longer coat is possible but needs more frequent brushing.

Separation anxiety in Cockapoos

Cockapoos are social dogs that often bond closely with their families, and some struggle when left alone. Signs include destructive behaviour when left, excessive barking or whining, and toileting indoors. Gradual alone-time training from puppyhood (starting with seconds and building up over weeks) works better than expecting a dog to cope with long absences without preparation.

For dogs already showing anxiety, enrichment such as snuffle mats and puzzle toys can help. For moderate to severe cases, ask your vet about a referral to a clinical animal behaviourist (registered with the ABTC in the UK). Your vet may also discuss medication to use alongside behaviour work in severe cases.

What we did

re-read, on 21 October 2026, the 2024 RVC study of Cockapoo, Cavapoo and Labradoodle health (Bryson et al.), McMillan et al. (2024) including Supplementary Table S3, and the Royal Kennel Club Cocker Spaniel and Miniature Poodle pages. Foods were checked against retailer listings in an earlier update.

What we did not do

find a published UK source for per-condition treatment costs, grooming prices, food prices per day or the claim that ear infections are the breed's 'number one' problem. An earlier version's cost column, risk levels, price-per-day column, star ratings and grooming prices have been removed, along with two foods that are not sold under the names given ('Arden Grange Sensitive Salmon' and an adult 'Lily's Kitchen Turkey Dry') and a wrong claim that Cockapoos have herding heritage.

Prices and terms change. Confirm on the retailer's page before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

What were Cockapoos bred for?

Companionship. The Cockapoo is a modern cross; its parents were working breeds. The Royal Kennel Club says the Cocker Spaniel was bred to hunt woodcock and the Poodle as a water retriever for duck hunters.

Is a Cockapoo hypoallergenic?

Not reliably. The Royal Kennel Club lists the Poodle as non-shedding but the Cocker Spaniel as shedding, so a Cockapoo can inherit either coat. If someone in your home has a dog allergy, spend time with the puppy's parents before you commit.

Cockapoo vs Cavapoo: which is healthier?

Neither stands out. In a 2024 RVC study, Cockapoos matched Cocker Spaniels on 49 of 57 disorders and Cavapoos matched Cavaliers on 50 of 57. See our Cockapoo vs Cavapoo comparison.

How much does Cockapoo insurance cost UK?

Premiums depend on age, postcode, excess and cover level, so compare real quotes. Cockapoos can inherit conditions from both parent breeds, and ear and skin problems can recur, so check how each policy treats ongoing conditions and the excess per claim.

Do Cockapoos need professional grooming?

Yes. The curly or wavy coat holds loose hair and will mat without regular brushing and grooming. Ask your groomer how often your dog's coat needs a full groom, and include grooming in your ownership budget.

What is the best food for a Cockapoo UK?

There is no single best food. Choose a complete food suited to your dog's size, age and activity, and compare cost per day on our dog food comparison. If your Cockapoo has recurring skin or ear issues, ask your vet about a structured elimination trial.

Are Cockapoos easy to train?

Many Cockapoos respond well to positive, reward-based training using food and praise. Early socialisation and consistent training from puppyhood matter, including gradual alone-time training to reduce the risk of separation anxiety.
