What we did

compared every GPS tracker we could find that the maker sells for cats with pound prices on its UK store on 22 October 2026: device price, every published plan, weight, battery claim and the collar supplied. Two-year cost is the device plus the cheapest two-year plan. Weight share is the published weight divided by 4,000 g. Labels name one measurable fact. Collar advice is from International Cat Care and Cats Protection; the AirTag wording is Apple's own.

What we did not do

fit or use these trackers, or measure accuracy, battery life or coverage. Tractive's Premium plan prices did not load for us, and its store showed euros until we set the shop to the United Kingdom. Pawfit and Weenect do not publish the weight of the collar they supply, so their weight share covers the tracker only.

Each tracker in detail

Lowest 2-year cost and lightest

Pawfit Lite for cats

Tracker with a quick-release cat collar in the box

Cost over 2 years
£137.76 (£42 + £95.76 Basic)
Weight
17.6 g (tracker; collar weight not published); 0.44% of a 4 kg cat
Battery
Up to 3 days
Collar
Quick-release cat safety collar included

Why it made the list

The lowest two-year cost and the lowest published weight of the three. What the maker says: Pawfit calls it "the world's smallest and lightest pet GPS tracker", says the box contains a cat collar and collar strap, and lists FIND mode with live updates every 5 seconds over a 4G multi-network connection.

Watch out for

The shortest battery claim here (up to 3 days), so expect to charge it about twice a week. The 17.6 g figure is the tracker alone.

See price at Pawfit£42.00 device, checked 22 Oct 2026. Plans: Required. Basic: £9.99 a month (app only), £71.88 for 12 months, £95.76 for 24 months. Premium: £83.88 for 12 months, £119.76 for 24 months, £143.64 for 36 months.
Lowest device price

Weenect XS

Sold on Weenect's UK store as a GPS cat collar

Cost over 2 years
£149.99 (£39.99 + £110)
Weight
27 g (tracker; collar weight not published); 0.68% of a 4 kg cat
Battery
Up to 7 days using Wi-Fi power-saving zones, or 2 days of continuous tracking
Collar
Elastic collar included (Weenect calls it anti-strangulation); silicone attachment fits other collars

Why it made the list

The lowest device price of the three, with a monthly plan you can stop. What the maker says: Weenect lists an "anti-strangulation elastic collar for cats" in the box and a silicone attachment "for a secure fit on any collar or harness". It says the tracker works in the UK on Vodafone, EE and Telefónica and can ring, vibrate and light up.

Watch out for

International Cat Care says it would never recommend a collar with an elastic section. If you follow that advice, fit the tracker to a snap-open collar instead of the elastic one supplied.

See price at Weenect£39.99 device, checked 22 Oct 2026. Plans: Required: £13 a month with no commitment, £80 a year, £110 for 2 years, £220 for 5 years.
Weight quoted with its collar

Tractive CAT 6 Mini

Tracker built into a safety-release collar

Cost over 2 years
£221 (£59 + £162 Basic)
Weight
32 g including the collar; 0.80% of a 4 kg cat
Battery
Up to 7 days with Power Saving Zones
Collar
Integrated safety-release collar for necks of 19 to 22.9 cm; for cats of 3 to 8 kg

Why it made the list

The only one sold as a single tracker-and-collar unit, with the weight quoted including the collar. What the maker says: Tractive says the CAT 6 Mini "weighs 32 g, including the collar, and is designed for cats between 3 and 8 kg", with "an integrated safety-release collar" and a "weight-adjustable safety buckle". It uses LTE/4G with GPS, GLONASS and Galileo.

Watch out for

The highest two-year cost here. The collar fits necks of 19 to 22.9 cm only, so measure your cat first. Tractive's store showed our checker euro prices until we set the shop to the UK.

See price at TractiveAd£59.00 device, checked 22 Oct 2026. Plans: Required. Basic: £120 a year, £162 for 2 years, £300 for 5 years. Tractive says a monthly plan is offered only for Basic in selected countries; Premium prices did not load for us.

Can you put a GPS tracker on a cat?

Yes. Pawfit, Weenect and Tractive each sell a GPS tracker that they say is for cats, and each clips to or is built into a collar. Tractive says its CAT 6 Mini is designed for cats of 3 to 8 kg with necks of 19 to 22.9 cm. A tracker helps you find a cat that is still wearing it; the microchip is what identifies a cat that has lost its collar. In England, cats must be microchipped and registered by 20 weeks old, including indoor cats, with a fine of up to £500 (GOV.UK, checked 22 October 2026). Our kitten checklist covers when to chip a kitten.

How heavy is a cat GPS tracker?

The makers publish these weights. As a share of a 4 kg cat, every tracker here is under 1% of body weight. International Cat Care and Cats Protection, whose collar advice we quote below, do not give a maximum tracker weight, so we give the maths rather than a pass mark.

Are GPS trackers safe for cats?

The collar is the part that can hurt a cat. International Cat Care lists injuries from collars, including a front leg caught through the collar and strangulation when the collar is hooked and does not break open. It advises a collar with a “snap-open” plastic buckle, fitted so only 1 to 2 fingers fit underneath, and says: “We would never recommend putting a collar with an elastic section on your cat.” A Cats Protection editorial note (16 March 2016) gives the same advice: use a quick-release collar and fit it so two fingers fit snugly underneath.

What each maker supplies

  • Pawfit Lite: a quick-release cat safety collar in the box.
  • Tractive CAT 6 Mini: tracker and safety-release collar in one, with a “weight-adjustable safety buckle”.
  • Weenect XS: an elastic collar that Weenect calls anti-strangulation. Its silicone attachment fits other collars, so you can use a snap-open collar instead, as International Cat Care advises.

Check the fit again after a few minutes, as International Cat Care suggests, and if your cat comes home with a collar injury, contact your vet. Our cat insurance guide explains what policies cover for injuries.

How much does a cat GPS tracker subscription cost?

Every tracker here needs a plan, because each one carries its own SIM. The cheapest two-year plans on 22 October 2026 were Pawfit Basic at £95.76, Weenect at £110 and Tractive Basic at £162. Monthly options were Weenect at £13 with no commitment and Pawfit Basic (app only) at £9.99; Tractive says monthly billing is offered only for Basic in selected countries. Over two years that makes £137.76, £149.99 and £221.00 with the device. For a cat's other running costs, see the cost of owning a cat.

AirTag and Bluetooth tags on cats

Apple's announcement of the new AirTag on 26 January 2026 says: “Designed exclusively for tracking objects, and not people or pets, the new AirTag incorporates a suite of industry-first protections against unwanted tracking” (Apple Newsroom UK). The same release gives the UK price as £29 for one AirTag. An AirTag or other Bluetooth tag has no GPS or mobile connection of its own: it shows where it was last near a phone on its maker's network. A GPS tracker works out its own position and sends it over a mobile network, which is what the subscription pays for.

Others we looked at

  • Kippy Cat: the maker's store showed only euro prices (€48.99 for the tracker) and we found no UK store with pound prices on 22 October 2026, although Kippy lists UK network coverage.
  • Tractive CAT Mini (earlier model): still listed in Tractive's model comparison (42 g including collar, up to 5 days), but the UK shop offered only the CAT 6 Mini for sale when we checked.
  • Apple AirTag and other Bluetooth tags: not GPS trackers, and Apple says AirTag is not designed for pets. See the AirTag section below.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put a GPS tracker on a cat?

Yes, on a collar. Pawfit, Weenect and Tractive all sell GPS trackers that they say are for cats. The three we compared weigh 17.6 g to 32 g, which is 0.44% to 0.80% of a 4 kg cat, and Tractive says its CAT 6 Mini is for cats of 3 to 8 kg. A tracker does not replace the microchip that cats in England must have by 20 weeks old.

Are GPS trackers safe for cats?

The main risk is the collar, not the tracker. International Cat Care lists collar injuries including a front leg caught through the collar and strangulation, advises a snap-open collar, and says it would never recommend a collar with an elastic section. Pawfit includes a quick-release collar, Tractive builds its tracker into a safety-release collar, and Weenect supplies an elastic collar but says its tracker clips to other collars.

How much is a cat GPS tracker?

On 22 October 2026 the trackers cost £39.99 (Weenect XS) to £59 (Tractive CAT 6 Mini), but every one needs a plan. Over two years, with the cheapest two-year plan, they cost £137.76 (Pawfit Lite) to £221.00 (Tractive), or £5.74 to £9.21 a month.

Is there a cat GPS tracker with no subscription in the UK?

None of the three GPS cat trackers we compared works without a plan: each carries a SIM and needs a subscription to send its location to your phone. Bluetooth tags such as AirTag need no plan, but they are not GPS trackers and Apple says AirTag is not designed for pets.

Cat GPS tracker or AirTag?

Apple says the new AirTag is "Designed exclusively for tracking objects, and not people or pets" (Apple Newsroom, 26 January 2026). An AirTag has no GPS or SIM of its own. A GPS cat tracker works out its own position and sends it over a mobile network, which is why it needs a subscription.

Do cat GPS trackers work?

They report a location wherever the tracker can see GPS satellites and reach a mobile network. Battery claims vary from up to 3 days (Pawfit Lite) to up to 7 days with power-saving zones (Weenect XS and Tractive CAT 6 Mini), and Weenect says continuous tracking cuts the XS to 2 days. These are the makers' figures; we have not measured them.
